Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
