An individual who spiked candy with sleeping medication and provided them to children at a youth camp in the region has admitted sexual offences against two children who were nine and 10.

The defendant was arrested after eight youngsters and an older person fell ill at the facility in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from that region, confessed to a multiple criminal counts when he stood at the courthouse on the end of the week.

However, he denied one of the sexual offences he was facing, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

The accused was held in detention prior to a subsequent court date on 28 November.

'Treat game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, described the defendant's actions to the court.

She explained his victims were disadvantaged youngsters who were participating in a youth camp which he operated.

The defendant conducted a "treat game" with the minors, the legal counsel explained, in which he would enter the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the defendant had played this game with the young males "over an extended period", and minors had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She stated the defendant had been able to explain this repeatedly as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had worries in recently.

Mrs Prior KC continued: "Recently" his stepchild had suspicions about the situation, with valid cause.

"They resolved" to investigate in the individual's items."

The legal counsel explained objects including lubricant, ointment and injection devices were located, and his family member alerted the authorities about his concerns.

She stated the defendant proceeded to conduct the "candy game" with six children that time - July 26th - and they were all sick the following morning.

"The police had not responded by that point," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was reviewing Leicestershire Police's handling of the incident.

The prosecutor stated the children were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so the family member notified the authorities again.

She said Ruben then engaged in the "sweet game" in a area of five youngsters.
