Several Hurt as Rough Air Impacts A Delta Airlines Aircraft Landing at Sydney

A number of individuals were hurt when a Delta jet originating in LA to Sydney, Australia encountered rough air this past Friday.

Delta Flight 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, a representative for the carrier stated. Four flight attendants sustained injuries.

Emergency medical services said they assessed a total of five people, and transferred three of them to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that comprised back pain and migraines. The injured spanned from their 30s to 70s.

The event represents the latest incident of aircraft being hit by severe turbulence, with researchers pointing out that shifting climate patterns is a significant contributor.

The aircraft was carrying 245 passengers and 15 crew members on the wide-body jet, the official noted, stating that the plane landed "safely" at Sydney Airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday.

Emergency responders reported they got a call just a mere three minutes ahead of the plane touched down, and ambulances were standing by on the runway.

Why plane turbulence is getting increasingly prevalent - and often stronger.

During the past year, two dozen individuals were hurt when a separate Delta aircraft, on a route from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, encountered "severe" rough air just two hours into the transoceanic journey, and had to make an emergency landing.

In 2024, passengers and crew on a Singapore Airlines flight endured a frightening brief five-second of severe turbulence. One passenger passed away and dozens were injured, as those without seatbelts were thrown from their seats and were slammed back.

Bumpy air is not uncommon while flying, and while cases of rough conditions are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are still very rare.

Estimates show that there are an estimated thousands of instances of severe or worse turbulence every year, out of a total of more than 35 million flights that now take off worldwide.

Severe turbulence is defined as when the vertical motions of a aircraft experiencing unstable air apply more than a significant G-force on your body - enough to propel you from your seat if you weren't wearing a safety belt.

As a changing climate shifts weather patterns, experts warn that commercial aviation could become less smooth: temperature changes and changing jet streams in the jet stream level are expected to heighten the frequency and intensity of significant turbulence.
